I am a user of Sligo mental health outpatient services. I usually have an appointment with a psychiatrist every four months.

But I have been feeling very dissatisfied with the psychiatrists I have been seeing for some time. I get the feeling they don't really care about how there patients are actually doing they don't listen they talk over you and its a very patronising experience. There's a different psychiatrist on every time I have an appointment who doesn't know you, and I feel sometimes that we do not communicate effectively.

Wednesday at an outpatient appointment was the worst I have ever seen, I seen a doctor for all of 60 seconds he seemed in a big hurry he just said your doing well didn't listen to a word I said and showed me the door. After waiting four months for an appointment its not good enough.

I feel its a very poor service and seems to be getting worse.

I meet with service users and sometimes with their families. I assess psychological problems and provide psychological interventions in an effort to help service users overcome their difficulties.

I am sorry to hear that your overall experiences have not been positive and would like to apologise for the service you received. I would like to discuss this with you in more detail, and you can email me directly at joanne.ohalloran@hse.ie in confidence.

I have copied your comments to the managers of the service in order that they can discuss them with staff to ensure they reflect on your experiences for the benefit of anyone attending clinic appointments.

In relation to the length of time between your appointments, it is not clear to me if this has been agreed between you and your psychiatrist to take place every 4 months. Would you prefer to have your review appointments more often? If so, you can discuss this with your key-worker or any member of the mental health team who are providing supports to you.
