My son has bipolar disorder. I recently attended a Eolas programme in Carrick on Shannon which was organised by the HSE mental health services there. The programme was for family members like me who have someone with a diagnosis of Bipolar. The programme was delivered by a professional from the local mental health service and a family member of someone who has bipolar. The programme was such a positive experience. I have learnt so much about mental illness and feel so much better equiped to know how to deal with my family member when he becomes unwell. Hearing other family members experiences made me realise that we are not alone. I recommend this programme to anyone who needs help in supporting their family member if they have this diagnosis.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your experience with the EOLAS programme.

I will pass on your feedback to those involved. As you are aware EOLAS is a new and innovative approach which is growing as a component of Mental Health Service delivery throughout Ireland. It is a programme for service users with a diagnosis of Schizophrenia or Bipolar Disorder and their families/close friends. EOLAS is unique as it uses a co-facilitated model working collaboratively in the delivery of the programme. People with self-expereince, family members and clinicians work together to provide information and promote recovery.

EOLAS consists of two parrallel programmes, each lasting 8 weeks, a programme for service users and a programme for families /close friends. These programmes are delivered by two co-facilitators, one of whom is a peer facilitator (I.e. a service user or family member) and the other a clinician. The 8 week programmes are available in the Sligo/Leitrim/South DonegalWest Cavan Mental Health Services (Spring and Autumn).
