Appointments
My 17 year old daughter was attending mental health services in Co Sligo for a long time, seen by a number of people.
Future plans
Although sometimes I thought we were getting somewhere, something else would happen and she would be passed on from one to another and the psychiatrist was the only consistent one in her care.
My concern with the system is the confidentiality. I believe family members should be informed every step, especially where a client is really down in the dumps, not only when they threaten suicide. That's the only time i was involved. I was told what my child had said but was never told or given support on how to deal with her, bar watch her.
My question to the services in this day and age: how can you watch your teen 24 hours a day even if that's the only thing you had to do, let alone having 3 younger?
Although staff were kind to my daughter I felt she never got any consistent support for long enough, until she collapsed in the waiting room one day and was ultimately hospitalised and admitted. It was a cry for help.
Changes need to happen no matter what age. The client's relatives need to be kept in the loop as families are suffering. My other children did, as i couldn't care for them so their aunt did until i dealt with the eldest. My little fellas lost out on the cuddles and time with mammy as i just hoped i wouldn't lose my daughter. Thankfully i didn't but others have.
