"We weren’t alone in helping our daughter"

About: Sligo/Leitrim Mental Health Services

(as a parent/guardian),

The service not only has given much needed support and encouragement to our daughter, but after many years of feeling that we were the only ones who ‘got her’ and helped her through tough times , there was a friend who our daughter trusted who could help her, get her the support needed. With notable improvements only after a couple of weeks. Thereby default gave us support and comfort not previously experienced in knowing that we weren’t alone in helping her.

The help Mary and all the co workers she has engaged to help our daughter through tough times are beyond saying ‘thank you’.

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to put them down on Care Opinion. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been for you to see your child experiencing these difficulties and I am glad that the people working in the mental health service have been able to help. If I could comment on two things you mention as being important; getting help from friends and not feeling alone. As you may have seen in the media the HSE has launched the little things campaign (#littlethings can make a big difference and yourmentalhealth.ie), one of the messages was...

“Talking to someone about what’s troubling you can make a big difference to how you feel. Confide in someone you trust, it’ll do you good.”

Sometimes it’s easy to forget to do the simple things and to make the small changes that might make us feel better or make problems more manageable, as well as seeking professional help when needed. Thank you for your story and for reminding us of this.

Meeting people who may have experienced similar issues and getting support from a group can also really help. Bodywhys have some excellent resources and links to group programmes like these.

Kind Regards,

Martin
