"If I pick up a drink"

About: Sligo/Leitrim Mental Health Services / HSE Alcohol & Substance Misuse Counselling Service

(as a service user),

As I sit here now, I start to think about what will happen if I pick up a drink.

With all to lose and nothing to gain, except sorrow hardship misery and pain.

It's a pain I know all to well that rings in my head just like a bell.

I know what happens if I pick, it up it all starts again from that the very first sup.

I drank to make myself feel good, I thought I was right, I was sure it would.

A short term solution, it isn't right, for this is a demon I need to fight.

I try to tell myself each day, it will all be grand I'll be ok ..

Dear Griffindor666,

Thank you for posting your thoughts about how you feel, at times, in between your counselling sessions and in the form of poetry. As a service we would be poorer without knowing the experiences of the people who use our services and also their comments on what we are doing well and what could be done better.

The HSE Alcohol & Substance Misuse Counselling Service is a Healthcare Service which aims to help people who want to cut down or stop using alcohol and other drugs. People can access the service through an appointment with their own GP, Consultant Psychiatrist or Medical Consultant who following an assessment may agree to refer to our service. There is no charge for the service and a care plan will be discussed and agreed with you giving you a menu of options. The aim is to help people start the process of change and set them on the path to recovery.

The Counselling Service covers Sligo, Leitrim, South Donegal and West Cavan and is provided in Health Centres close to where people live. The service strives to reduce the impact of alcohol and other drugs on individuals and family members. We are part of a wider landscape of supports for people with drug and alcohol issues which can be viewed online as below:

Thank you again for posting your thoughts and I wish you the very best for your continued recovery.

Kind Regards,

Martin
