Towards the end of August, my husband was taken by stretcher from a cruise ship moored off shore and taken by tender to an awaiting ambulance. He is in his 80's and had suffered a fall on the ship and it was uncertain whether he had broken his foot, knees and possibly his hip. In rough seas, the paramedics boarded the ship and assessed him. When they got him on to the ambulance he was taken to Letterkenny hospital, a drive of approx 50 miles. They stayed with us in Emergencies for several hours until he was attended to and admitted.
I can’t stress enough the care, sympathy and practical help they gave me. I was in a strange town with no clue where to stay near the hospital, but they telephoned a hotel for me and arranged for a taxi and my luggage to be taken there.Thankfully the injuries were a slight fracture of the hip and broken big toe and very bruised foot. His knees were just badly swollen. He received excellent treatment from the hospital and was released 3 days later. We managed to get a flight home from Belfast to Malta on 30th August.
Though the medium of this page, I would like to publicly thank MARTIN and DONNA, paramedics of Carndonagh, County Donegal who went above and beyond their duties.
Saints in uniform! I will be forever grateful to them.
