"Getting help for my depression"

About: Sligo/Leitrim Mental Health Services / Crisis Resolution Team

(as the patient),

I had depression for a couple of years and didn’t know what it was. The negative symptoms of depression caused a lot of self hate and negative thoughts which lead to more depression, creating a loop I didn’t know how to break. This lead to a suicidal thoughts every time I drank alcohol which I shrugged off as strange and ‘just the alcohol’.

After a couple of years of avoiding the problem I attempted suicide after consuming a lot of alcohol along with other substances. Following this I got help from the crisis team who were brilliant and I can’t thank them enough for the help they gave me.

The diagnosis alone was a weight off my shoulders followed by daily visits from the crisis team gave me a good foundation to help myself get better. They were flexible in what time suited me for visits and each member of the crisis team provided me with helpful information and conversation about my recovery.

I’m sharing my story for two reasons, firstly to highlight the vital work the Sligo/Leitrim crisis team are doing and to thank every member that visited my house and helped me get through an extremely difficult time in my life, I genuinely can’t speak highly enough of them.

The second reason is the chance that sharing this story encourages someone struggling with their mental health to seek help, I spent two years of my twenty’s struggling and although I’m grateful I got/getting help (I’m only at the start of my recovery) I wish I would have reached out for help sooner. Best of luck to the team in the future and anyone accessing this site.
